Microgrids Seen As Paving The Way To Full Smart Grid Integration Faster Than Utilities Alone
Forecasted to grow 13% during the 2009 to 2014 period, the market for microgrids will near $7 billion by 2014 supported by implementation at large industrial operations, military bases and communities where electricity is unstable or non-existent. According to SBI Energy, microgrids will become the incubator and operational test bed for innovative smart grid solutions and vendors since it is significantly less difficult and costly to deploy smart technologies.

MoCA and HomePlug Power Alliance Sign Formal Liaison
HomePlug is developing its new Green PHY spec for smart grid applications. All specs are slated for completion in 2010. MoCA, leveraging its existing installed base of coax in the home, is also pursuing incorporation into the Smart Grid Interoperability Guidelines.

EDSA Introduces Master Controller for Microgrid Management and Control
The platform is designed to answer the need for a master controller to serve as an intelligent interface between a microgrid and the utility grid. It is intended to enable the seamless integration of on-premise and distributed energy sources -- such as solar, wind, or local co-generation -- without compromising the reliability of power from the legacy utility grid.

AMSC Signs Contract to Develop 5 Megawatt Wind Turbines with China's Dongfang Turbine
Dongfang is one of China's top machinery companies. The company entered the wind power market in 2004 and shipped more than 800 wind turbines with a 1.5 MW power rating in 2008, making it the country's third largest wind turbine manufacturer. Dongfang will soon commission its first prototype 2.5 MW wind turbine designed under a prior agreement with AMSC Windtec and will enter volume production of these wind turbines in the second half of 2010.

Indianapolis Power & Light Company Chooses Ecologic Analytics' MDM System
The meter data management systems (MDMS) project is part of IPL's Advanced Demand Side Management Initiative, which is subject to approval by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. The Ecologic MDMS will support IPL in further enhancing energy information for approximately 470,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Indianapolis and the surrounding counties spanning more than 528 square miles of Central Indiana.

Minnesota Power Reaches Milestone In Renewable Energy Efforts With Purchase of Interstate Transmission Line
Purchase of the direct current (DC) transmission line from the Square Butte Electric Cooperative will further Minnesota Power's long range plan to bring more renewable energy into its system. The company plans to develop several hundred megawatts of new wind generation in North Dakota and deliver wind-fueled electricity to customers via the DC line.
