S&C Electric Company announced a suite of new and enhanced products for smart grids today at DistribuTECH. The expanded solution sets are designed to use intelligent devices embedded throughout the grid to improve reliability, capacity, and efficiency, a priority for electric utilities.

"Utilities today are expected to deliver ever-higher levels of electric service reliability while also reducing costs and greenhouse gas emissions through improved efficiency," says Mike Edmonds, S&C Vice President-Strategic Solutions. "In a time of economic uncertainty, S&C continues its commitment to innovate smart grid solutions that provide real benefits today and also build a foundation to meet future energy requirements."

S&C introduced its IntelliTeam DEM Distributed Energy Management, a platform that is intended to allow utilities to optimize the usage of community energy storage (CES) resources. IntelliTeam DEM is designed to provide a single entry point to large aggregations of CES units, allowing them to function as a virtual power plant. The platform is designed to provide state-of-the-art energy dispatch with convenient real-time and archival data storage, and seamlessly integrate with all central office systems to provide a complete integrated solution.

"An integrated system with IntelliTeam DEM can provide the equivalent reserve of a peaking power plant, but at a fraction of the cost and with much greater flexibility in addressing distribution system capacity constraints," says Jim Sember, S&C Vice President-Power Quality Products. "IntelliTeam DEM, used in conjunction with CES fleets, also helps utilities buffer the effects of distributed renewable resources, like solar panels, to ensure grid stability and reliability."

S&C also announced expanded features for the IntelliTeam SG Automatic Restoration System and IntelliRupter® Pulsecloser, both components of S&C's self-healing solutions. IntelliTeam SG now includes broken conductor detection, allowing utilities to determine if a distribution line is physically broken. It also incorporates enhancements based on customer input to further simplify use of this software.
