Session Abstract
12:00 - 12:30 pm EDT
Harnessing Consumer Power
With the advent of distributed energy resources and the implementation of the smart grid, traditional lines of demarcation between utilities and consumers have begun to blur. This presentation will provide an overview of various strategies for engaging the consumer. Topics to be addressed include:
- Smart grid value proposition for consumers
- Information needs of consumers before they make purchase decisions or consider deploying smart energy solutions
- Concerns over health risks associated with radio frequency from smart meters and other smart-enabled devices in the home
- Expectation for plug-in-play smart devices in the home
- Relationship between consumers and utilities
- Privacy concerns that arise from the new data collection, communication, and information sharing capabilities related to energy usage
The process to alleviate these concerns will start with consumer engagement, which presents utilities and innovators with both opportunities and challenges. The session will seek to demonstrate how education, standards and collaboration will stimulate new innovation and accelerate smart gird adoption.
Note: For quality purposes, this presentation was pre-recorded on May 23 for initial broadcast during
this V-Summit. The live Q&A discussion on May 31 will begin at 12:25 pm EDT and go for approximately 15 minutes.
