Session Abstract
2:15 - 2:45 pm EDT
Distribution Automation Technology and Real-World Case Studies
EPB, having recently deployed its 1170th smart switch on its distribution system, is already seeing benefits in reliability and power quality for the customers it serves in Chattanooga, TN.
EPB developed a robust plan for automation that included completing the implementation of FISR (Fault Isolation and Service Restoration) technology for its 46kv Sub-Transmission System and implementing FISR technology throughout the service territory on the 12kv Distribution System. The utility is also going through the process of automating the 12kv system, implementing a strategy that uses embedded intelligence to automatically reconfigure the distribution system after a fault and quickly restore service to segments of the feeder which aren’t affected by the fault. The objective is to reduce “Customer Minutes of Interruption” (CMI) and markedly improve reliability.
In this session, Jim Glass, EPB’s Manager of Smart Grid Development, will describe the process the utility went through for its DA deployment and share results as well as lessons learned throughout.
Note: For quality purposes, this presentation was pre-recorded on July 9 for initial broadcast during
this V-Summit. The live Q&A discussion on July 12 will begin at 2:45 pm EDT and go for 10 minutes.

Jim has over 25 years of experience in the energy industry, from his time at Florida Power & Light to his position at EPB, where he helps manage the development of one of the country's most sophisticated and automated smart grid systems.
EPB was established in 1935 as a non-profit agency of the City of Chattanooga and has grown to be one of the largest municipal power distributors in the country, serving more than 169,000 homes and businesses in a 600-square mile area. In 2009, the company was awarded a $111 million matching grant from the Department of Energy to expedite the completion of the Chattanooga area's smart grid, the largest per capita amount awarded to any utility in the country.
Today, the fiber optic network constructed for the purpose of powering the most automated smart grid in the country is also serving to expand EPB's communications service offerings to include residential customers throughout the service area. Currently offering Internet speed up to one gigabit-per-second, the communications services offered by EPB Fiber Optics also include IPTV services and phone.
