Session Abstract
1:00 - 1:30 pm EDT
A Smarter Thermostat: Lessons for Consumer Engagement
With the residential demand response market set to more than double by 2015 and with increased focus on energy efficiency, utilities and consumers both stand to benefit from emerging home energy management technologies. Two-way communication and consumer-focused management tools are both on the rise; and still, with these new solutions coming to market, understanding how users interact with specific tools and devices in their daily lives is essential for utilities eager to maximize the returns of load control and energy efficiency programs.
This session will examine how two-way communicating thermostats offer utilities an alternative to traditional load control programs, while also giving consumers the tools they need to maximize the efficiency of the biggest part of their energy bills -- their HVAC systems. Pulling directly from billions of datapoints generated each month by devices in the field, the speaker will show how a consumer-engaging approach to residential thermostat software, focused on user experience and daily efficiency opportunities that follow, leads to ongoing savings across utility service territories. Looking at HVAC runtime, thermostat settings, and user interactions, the session will quantify the value of real-time behavioral coaching and efficiency optimization. The session will also discuss how a multi-channel distribution model supports utility load control programs, focusing especially on those where end customers are able to self-enroll in DR programs without any utility pre-installation involvement.
Note: For quality purposes, this presentation was pre-recorded on May 25 for initial broadcast during
this V-Summit. The live Q&A discussion on May 31 will begin at 1:30 pm EDT and go for approximately 15 minutes.

Seth Frader-Thompson is the founder and CEO of EnergyHub, a venture-backed startup based in Brooklyn, NY that develops load management systems and energy efficiency tools for utilities and their end customers. Prior to entering the cleantech space, Seth built electromechanical systems for NASA and the Department of Defense while at Honeybee Robotics. Drawing from his background in robotics and engineering, Seth now works to bring intelligent design and robust software technologies to the energy utility sector. Together with the team at EnergyHub, Seth's goal is to provide better program returns for utilities through demand response solutions that combine comprehensive dispatching and monitoring systems, low-cost commercially available wireless thermostats, and consumer-engaging software tools.
