Session Abstract

9:00 - 9:30 am EDT

Communications Technology is Not One Size Fits All

Utilities worldwide are looking for the best wireless technology solutions to communicate and connect with meters. However, there is not a one-size-fits-all solution for smart grid implementation, so utilities need a range of technology options to solve their specific needs. For example, both cellular and radio frequency (RF) mesh networking technologies are solutions for a deployment, and both methods have become increasingly popular for a variety of reasons including security and performance. Dr. Rob Conant will base his discussion on his experience implementing a variety of large customer deployments for utilities such as Hydro One, Central Maine Power, and British Gas. He will showcase how, in these specific instances, either RF mesh, cellular, or a combination of both communications solutions was suitable for these deployments, and how each situation needed to be approached through a different lens.

Cellular networks are highly reliable, have a strong ecosystem, and utilize mature technology. RF mesh AMI networking is a cost-effective solution for utilities due to the flexible coverage extension and easy adaptability the technology offers. The technology can also be deployed at any tier of the smart grid network to help form an interconnected grid for an overall reliable communications infrastructure. Though every communication technology offers its own set of benefits, utilities are really looking for solution options that fit their specific needs, be that cellular, RF mesh or a mix of the two. Using his background and experiences, Dr. Conant will also give a detailed background about both RF mesh and cellular networking solutions and detail some of the advantages of using each technology.
Note: For quality purposes, this presentation was pre-recorded on May 16 for initial broadcast during this V-Summit. The live Q&A discussion on May 17 will begin at approximately 9:35 am EDT and go for 15 minutes.
