The City of Things
By 2050 70% of the world's population will live in cities consuming the vast bulk of the world's resources. New insights and solutions are urgently required to manage these scarce resources efficiently and to operate new and regenerated urban spaces. This trend is already underway, with new generations of sensor networks in public and privately managed physical spaces. A key component will be the ability to extract, aggregate, analyze, and manage sensor data in these environments. This session examines this emerging landscape, and the evolving role of technologies such as machine-to-machine (M2M) communications in bringing rapid and significant change to a wide variety of industries and our everyday lives. The wide-ranging benefits include greater productivity, energy conservation, smart grids, remote access, cost efficiency, personal security, and enhanced health and social care.

Smart City Global Status, Market Drivers, and Technology Trends
Smart city models are at a nascent stage, and smart cities will take many different forms in different parts of the world. Pilot projects are underway that could provide templates for the design of new urban centers in Asia and the Middle East, as well as frameworks for overlaying infrastructure to make older cities smarter in Europe and North America. However, there are many challenges still to be faced by smart city planners in achieving this vision. This session examines key smart city developments around the world, as well as the market opportunity for smart city technologies in the decade ahead. We will discuss the impact of the smart city on key technology markets, as well as the size and growth of the market for smart city technologies through 2020.

Beyond Metering - Advanced Municipal Infrastructure and Digital Cities of Excellence
Different smart grid technologies have been deployed throughout the world, but many municipal governments are hesitant to join the bandwagon. This panel of experts will discuss technologies and approaches that can assist communities toward a phased, cost-effective approach that begins with efficiency measures which can fund additional steps; the end objective is to end up in a Digital Community of Excellence that stimulates economic development and overall livability. Panelists will discuss the rationale and approach for modernization in an accessible manner for non-technical decision-makers, contributing pertinent experiences, know-how, and case studies.

Data Analytics and Benchmarking for Smarter Cities
The harsh economic climate is pervasive at all levels of government, but is keenly felt at the local level. We have already seen budgets cut, employee layoffs and rising citizen complaints. Municipal leaders are trying to figure out how to continue operating with fewer resources, while citizens continue to demand higher quality services, transparency and improved outcomes. Local governments need to understand how they are performing, learn how to manage better and improve municipal performance. That need has never been greater than it is today. This session will examine several municipal case studies that show how building a performance culture with data analytics and benchmarking can drive higher performance and operational efficiencies.
